Section 1: Introduction to Kobe and Sannomiya
Welcome to Kobe: A City Embraced by Mountains and Sea
Kobe is one of Japan’s most unique and captivating cities. Nestled between the lush Mount Rokko to the north and the calm Seto Inland Sea to the south, this historic port city flourished as a gateway to the world when Japan first opened its doors to international trade.
Because of this global history, Kobe offers a beautiful blend of deep Japanese traditions—like ancient shrines—and modern Western influences, seen in its architecture, jazz scene, and world-class coffee culture.

What is “Sannomiya”? The Heart of the City
If you’re visiting Kobe, Sannomiya (三宮) is where your journey begins. More than just a transportation hub, Sannomiya is the energetic soul of Kobe.
- The Ultimate Transit Hub: All major train lines (JR, Hankyu, Hanshin, and Subway) converge here. It’s incredibly convenient, located just a 2-minute subway ride from the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) stop at Shin-Kobe Station.

- A Truly Walkable City: Everything is within reach. From Sannomiya Station, you can walk north to the historic Kitano Ijinkan district (former foreign residences) or south to the vibrant Nankinmachi (Chinatown) and the scenic Meriken Park waterfront.

- A Foodie’s Paradise: From world-famous Kobe Beef restaurants to stylish hidden cafes and bustling shopping arcades, Sannomiya offers endless options to explore from morning until night.
In Kobe, you can “walk from the mountains toward the sea.” It’s a city that invites you to slow down, explore on foot, and discover something new around every corner.
Section 2: How to Get to Kobe from Tokyo & Yokohama
Kobe is incredibly accessible from the Kanto region (Tokyo and Yokohama). Whether you prioritize speed, budget, or a scenic road trip, here is a complete guide to choosing the best transportation for your journey.
Transportation Comparison: Tokyo/Yokohama to Kobe

🚄 My Personal Recommendation: The Shinkansen
Without a doubt, the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is the best way to travel. From Shin-Yokohama Station, the “Nozomi” train whisks you to Shin-Kobe Station in just about 2 hours and 10 minutes.
It’s punctual, incredibly smooth, and offers the most relaxing experience. Plus, you can enjoy an Ekiben (station lunch box) while watching the Japanese countryside fly by.
💡 Pro Tips for a Better Shinkansen Experience (See Infographic Below)

Essential Tips for Travelers
🚻 Restrooms (Toilet Facilities)
- Shinkansen & Trains: Spotlessly clean restrooms are available in every few carriages. Most modern trains have accessible Western-style toilets.
- Highway Bus: Most overnight buses have a small restroom on board, and they make regular 15-minute stops at “Service Areas” (high-end rest stops) which are famous for their great food and clean facilities.
- Stations: Public restrooms are available at all major stations. They are free, safe, and usually very clean.
🧳 Luggage Information
- Shinkansen “Large Luggage” Rule: If your suitcase’s total dimensions (length + width + height) exceed 160cm, you must book a specific “Baggage Reservation” seat. There is no extra charge if you book in advance, but there is a ¥1,000 fee if you don’t.
- Coin Lockers: Once you arrive at Sannomiya or Shin-Kobe, you’ll find plenty of coin lockers. They usually cost between ¥300 and ¥800 depending on the size.
- Hands-Free Travel: Consider using Takkyubin (luggage delivery service) to send your bags directly from your hotel in Tokyo/Yokohama to your Kobe hotel. It usually arrives the next day and costs around ¥2,000-¥3,000 per bag.
